Peugeot history, French auto manufacturer: 2 centuries of innovation
With major inventions and numerous successes, Peugeot has written many important pages in the history of automobiles.
It all began in 1889 at the World’s Fair in Paris; Armand Peugeot unveiled the very first automobile bearing the name Peugeot: a steam tricycle (never commercialized), created by the engineer, Léon Serpollet.
In 1948 came the launch of the first monohull car. The Peugeot 203 was the first post-war car to be produced.
Peugeot launched the 404 in 1960 and revolutionized the automobile world with the very first direct fuel injection engine.
Voted Car of the Year in Europe in 1969, the 504 enjoyed the longest life of all Peugeot models (3,700,000 vehicles were put into circulation up through 2006). Though designed for middle-class consumers, it became the queen of African and South American roadways, thanks to its great endurance.
Right on time, in 1972, Peugeot launched the world’s shortest sedan, the Peugeot 104. The slogan All Peugeot in 3,58 metres mirrored the fact that it was the smallest 4-door sedan in the world.
Ever concerned with innovation, in 1979 came the launch of the Peugeot 604. With its style and stature, it was adopted by the elite of the French state.
The first commercialized diesel turbo motor in Europe was mounted on the 604.
1983 became the Year of Peugeot. The 205 won the World’s Championship twice at the rallies and won two Paris-Dakar races. It would become the best-selling car in France as well as the most exported French car.
For the second time in its history, Peugeot won the European trophy for Car of the Year thanks to the 405, its new family vehicle in 1988.
Ten years later, Peugeot launched the 206. It was voted three-time World Champion of rallies. It’s CC version (2000) relaunched the "transformable coupé" first initiated by Peugeot in 1934.
In 2016, Peugeot once again hit hard when it launched the all new Peugeot 3008. Acclaimed for its style, interior design and options, the new Peugeot 3008 was voted Car of the Year in 2017 by a jury of 58 European journalists. It is the first SUV to be so honoured since the creation of the trophy in 1964 and the 5th Peugeot to win Car of the Year along with the 308 in 2014, the 307 in 2002, the 405 in 1988 and the 504 in 1969.
In 2018, the Peugeot family gets even bigger with the long-awaited launch of the Peugeot Rifter model. This 5 or 7 seater family car has all the necessary equipment to please families. Peugeot innovates again by launching a new version of the beloved Peugeot 508. This luxury sedan was voted 'Most beautiful car of the year 2018'.
With the new challenges of the 21st century, the Peugeot adventure is continuing on.
